'Thrilled to be getting more.' A boost in COVID vaccine supply for Michiana counties


An initially restricted supply of COVID-19 vaccines seems to be loosening for some area counties, as Indiana. Gov. Eric Holcomb recently announced the state would receive 13,000 more doses, raising its weekly federal allotment to 91,000.
In St. Joseph County, the 7-day rolling average of new cases on Friday dropped to 81, the lowest level since Oct. 9. More good news followed: the county will begin receiving 1,000 more vaccine doses for at least the next four weeks, said county deputy health officer Dr. Mark Fox. That’s an increase from 1,500 to 2,500 per week, enabling the health department vaccine clinic to increase daily vaccinations from 300 to 500. ....

COVID vaccine clinics offer unused doses to people on standby lists


In her first night as a volunteer greeter Tuesday at the St. Joseph County Health Department’s coronavirus vaccine clinic at St. Hedwig’s Parish, Amanda Govaert Konrath loved seeing seniors’ joy at receiving the vaccine, including the elderly man who suggested turning on the reception hall’s disco ball and exclaimed, “Let’s have a party!”
But by the end of the shift, Govaert Konrath had her own reason to celebrate. She and the other four volunteers received doses of the vaccine that were left over after scheduled appointments.
Govaert Konrath, a relatively healthy 41-year-old deputy in the county Voter Registration office, said she initially felt some guilt because she didn’t meet Indiana’s requirements to receive the vaccine yet. She’s not a health care or long-term care worker, a first responder, or age 70 or older. ....
