Wingate University Pondering Next Move After Discovering School Named After Slaveholder

The quad and Wingate University
A special committee is being formed at Wingate University to consider next steps after it was discovered that the university is named after a slaveholder.
Wingate President Rhett Brown said in a statement that the Charlotte-area university investigated names around the campus in 2018 to see if anything was named after someone with “an egregious past.” During that investigation, nothing was uncovered to link Washington Manly Wingate to slavery.
Brown says he recently learned of Wingate’s past from the president of Wake Forest University. It was discovered when a Wake Forest sociology professor discovered that every president of Wake Forest up until the Civil War including Washington Wingate kept enslaved people. Wingate University was founded in 1896 as The Wingate School. ....

St. Louis County police chief 'surprised' by no-confidence votes

The firing of two trainers who used racist slurs at the police academy
Most recently, the organization has criticized Barton’s decision to transfer Officer Shanette Hall out of the recruitment division and put her back on patrol. Hall is a board member of the Ethical Society and recently gave interviews to national media outlets talking about the racism Black women face on the force.
Barton said Thursday she was transferred 12 times during her 40-year career with the department and not one of them was by her choosing.
“I can say that under my realm as chief, there have never been any retaliatory transfers, discriminating transfers made here,” she said. “Not everybody is going to be pleased with transfers that are made, but they have to be made based on what s best for the police department and for the efficient and effective operation of this department.” ....

'A slap in the face.' 'Not true.' 'Symbolic gesture.' Consultants' reports on local police get some pushback | Law and order

ST. LOUIS — Representatives of rank-and-file police officers in both the city and county were sharply critical Tuesday of reports by outside consultants who examined local law enforcement agencies and recommended big changes.
Heather Taylor, a recently retired city police sergeant and current spokesperson for the Ethical Society of Police, said the review by Teneo consultants of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department — the city’s department — ignored recent high-profile criminal cases and lawsuits accusing some officers of involuntary manslaughter, assault, bribery and racial discrimination.
And, unlike a parallel study of the St. Louis County Police Department, relatively little mention was made of a racial divide in the city’s police force, Taylor said. ....
