NORTHAMPTON A decision on whether the historic St. John Cantius Church can be torn down to make way for five townhouses has been delayed at least three months, giving the committee weighing the issue more time to consider proposals from both sides of the contentious debate. The Central Business Architecture Committee voted Tuesday to continue a public hearing on the proposed demolition of the church on Hawley Street. Your recent guest column about the “A Look Back” feature picked a poor target in the ongoing struggle for women’s and racial equality.
By definition, the column reflects what was printed in the Gazette years ago when people’s interests and values were very different than they are today. In general, it’s unfair to judge what prior generations did by today’s standards of behavior, and the practice tends to demonize people of integrity and accomplishment.
Part of the value of “A Look Back” is to make us aware of how times have changed. Do we really want to condemn it because articles printed in a different generation reflect outdated attitudes? If we do, we provide the ammunition the Republicans need for their complaints about how extreme liberals get with their “cancel culture.”
