East Alton will host its annual Village Spring Cleanup beginning Monday. During the normal garbage pick-up day next week, residents may put out bulk items and other junk not suitable for normal garbage pick-up. Mayor Joe Silkwood tells The Big Z you should have those items placed in the area your normal trash is located by 6am on your designated day. Click here for Silkwood s comments Some items are not allowed, like electronics, tires, shingles, car parts, concrete, and hazardous materials such as oil, paint, asbestos. If you would prefer to haul your bulk items to the village drop-off center, you can do so at no charge to village residents. You must be able to show proof of residency. The Village Drop-Off Center is located at 4th & Playground Court, behind the Municipal Garage, and will be open Monday-Friday from 7am-2:30pm and Saturday from 8am-11:50am. ....

East Alton’s current police chief will become its mayor in a couple of weeks. Darren Carlton ran unopposed in the April election, and tendered his resignation effective May 4 th at last night’s village board meeting. He will take over for the retiring Joe Silkwood. Silkwood tells The Big Z he is thankful for his career in local government. Click here for Silkwood s comments He says they have been working on the transition for a while and is looking forward to what a Carlton administration can accomplish. Silkwood became mayor in 2015 upon the retirement of Fred Bright. Before that Silkwood was the village’s Treasurer, Parks & Recreation Director, and Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation in a career dating back to 1990. ....

The future of the Citizen s Bank Building in East Alton is not looking good for those that want to save the building. About five years ago, East Alton Mayor Joe Silkwood said on The Big Z there was a plan to demolish the building and turn it into green space, but he says the hope remains it can be repurposed. A developer that had been in talks to buy the building about a year ago disappeared. Silkwood tells The Big Z time is running out, as the village has reached out to Congressman Mike Bost to see if any money for demolition is available through the recent stimulus package. ....

The East Alton Village Board has given approval to another aspect of the Wood River Avenue project. The board recently approved the construction using MFT funding for their part of the project. East Alton Mayor Joe Silkwood tells The Big Z this will upgrade the road from 3 rd Street to the Wood River / East Alton border. Click here for Silkwood s comments He says 75% of the project is paid for with federal funding, and 25% through the county. The village pays for the engineering.
