This week in history: The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising – People's World

For four weeks, from April 19 to May 16, 1943, during World War II, residents of the Jewish ghetto in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, Poland, staged an armed revolt against deportations to extermination camps. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising inspired other revolts in extermination camps and ghettos throughout German-occupied Eastern Europe.
Shortly after the German invasion of Poland, in September 1939, more than 400,000 Jews in Warsaw, the capital, were confined to an area of the city that was little more than 1 square mile. In November 1940, this ghetto was sealed off by brick walls, barbed wire and armed guards. Anyone caught leaving was shot on sight. Among all the ghettos established in cities throughout Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe, the Warsaw ghetto was the largest. The Nazis controlled the amount of food that was brought into the ghetto. Disease and starvation killed thousands each month. ....

Remembering the characters who wandered Upper Bucks

According to my Webster’s, a tinker is “a person who can make all kinds of minor repairs; jack-of-all-trades.” Some call them “handymen.” I know several who are quite talented, from Hilltown in the upper end of Bucks County to Falls in the lower end. One taught me how to solder plumbing. Another how to properly do roofing.
The term “tinker” traces back to Irish and Scottish Highland travelers, homeless drifters in 13th century Britain. They made a living as metalworkers, offering to fix pots and pans using molten solder to patch holes. That tradition expanded to this country to define traveling fix-it men. ....

The 10 best Justice League comics in DC Comics history

If the history of
Zack Snyder’s Justice League feels as if it stretches back a long time, spare a thought for the comic book at the heart of it. DC’s
Justice League of America debuted in 1960, with the team actually making its first appearance earlier that year in
Brave and the Bold #28.
In the six decades since, the team has been relaunched, rebooted, dissolved, and remade on multiple occasions, with all manner of heroes running through its line up, as the group has moved from the Northeastern coast of the US to the moon and back in terms of home locale, with just a brief stopover in Detroit during the 1980s. They’ve seen some changes, to say the least. ....

Early Detroit Rocker Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels

Early Detroit Rocker Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels
Mitch Ryder has recorded more than 25 albums over four decades. He’s a singer and musician and in real life he’s known as William Sherille Levise Jr. Mitch had a gruff, wailing style of singing, complemented by his awesome energy onstage. His first band called Tempest, was formed while he was attending Warren High School, and often played at a club called the village.
Mitch Ryder s next adventure was his band called Billy Lee and the Rivieras, which was the band he was in when they met songwriter and producer Bob Crewe. (You may remember The Bob Crewe Generation with the song Music to Watch Girls By used in a Diet Pepsi Commercial in the 60s) Meeting and working with Bob Crewe changed everything, including their name. They had to drop the Rivieras because there was already a band with that name. So with the help of a phone book, Levise took the stage name of Mitch Ryder, and at that point Mitch Ryder and The Detro ....
