KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Nearly half of all people in Knoxville s Black communities live at or below the poverty line, and officials said that it can act as a catalyst for other issues. These communities can face issues in health care, education and housing disparities.
Experts also said that the disparity between communities can lead to upticks in violence. Despite the issues, many said that these communities lack the resources to find solutions and address the problems. ....

Birmingham leaders ready for capital improvements in 2021


Birmingham’s new yet notably experienced City Manager Tom Markus is getting a kick out of running into new and old friends, employees and supporters.
He was city manager for Birmingham, one of Michigan’s wealthier communities, from 1989 to 2010, and recently returned to the power position after more years of city management in both Iowa and Kansas.
“Birmingham is an exceptional community that has managed its affairs very well,” Markus said. “We have a number of boards and commissions with engaged citizens.  I’m confident that we will rebound (from the pandemic) quite well.
It’s great to be back.” ....
