Claude Walker Park will get a revamp thanks to huge GEM gift

More Knoxville children and teens will get to play sports without worrying about whether their family has money to chip in or whether the field is in good condition. 
That s what leaders in the GEM Community Development Group hope to achieve with a new investment of more than $1.6 million. 
The group will donate $1.1 million to add turf, hitting cages, pitching cages and improved lighting and fencing at Claude Walker Park. The park is used by Austin-East Magnet High School teams, the Knox Area Youth Alliance teams and the Baby Roadrunners football program. The group also will invest in local youth sports commissions to help pay for uniforms and equipment.  ....

The Knoxville Divide: Poverty and Black communities
Data shows that nearly half all people in Knoxville s Black communities live at or below the poverty line, and some advocates are working to change that.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Nearly half of all people in Knoxville s Black communities live at or below the poverty line, and officials said that it can act as a catalyst for other issues. These communities can face issues in health care, education and housing disparities.
Experts also said that the disparity between communities can lead to upticks in violence. Despite the issues, many said that these communities lack the resources to find solutions and address the problems. ....
