When we elect public officials, we expect them, of course, to be good stewards of the public’s money, to uphold the public’s trust and to help lead our communities to a brighter future. We also expect them to be professional and respectful of those who work for them either directly, or indirectly and to be ambassadors for our communities.
A good example of what the public should not expect them to do and what should not become accepted practice moving forward is what took place Tuesday at the Ohio County Commission meeting. During that meeting, commissioners voted unanimously to dismiss Nancy Weeks as a member of the Ohio County Development Authority’s board. Weeks said she learned of the action when contacted after the meeting by our reporter. ....

WHEELING Ohio County commissioners made changes to the Ohio County Development Authority Board Tuesday night, replacing two members and appointing two others to take their places. One of those removed, though, said she was unaware she was being replaced.
OCDA Vice President Nancy Weeks a member since the OCDA was formed in 2007 was the first removal from the board. She will be replaced by Del. Erikka Storch, R-Ohio, also president of the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce. ....

More than a year after the pandemic changed how everything in our lives operates including government it continues to concern us that some local governments fail to adequately host meetings accessible to the public.
Two recent examples come to mind.
First was a meeting of St. Clairsville City Council from earlier this month. The council there has been hosting meetings via conference call, with no public participation other than to listen in. Not only was the public shut out from having a voice in those meetings, but council members voted, on at least one occasions we’re aware of, secretly by email on a personnel issue. That’s unacceptable and violates open meetings laws. ....
