Dhaka has requested Kuala Lumpur to allow the Bangladeshi migrants, who got stranded after coming here on leave due to the pandemic, to return to their workplaces in Malaysia.
It also sought to widen cooperation on trade and investment with the Southeast Asian country.
The calls were made when newly appointed Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Hazanah Md Hasim called on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam at the foreign ministry on Thursday.
Malaysia is home to around a million Bangladeshis. The annual trade volume between the two countries is about $2.4 billion with Bangladesh exporting products to Malaysia worth $260 billion. ....

Md Mokammel Hossain has taken charge as the new secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.
A member of the 10th BCS Administration Cadre, Mokammel Hossain previously served as additional secretary in the Ministry of Public Administration, Civil Aviation Ministry said in a release today.
On December 24, the Ministry of Public Administration appointed him as the Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
Former senior secretary at the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism M Mohibul Haque has retired after completing his one year contract on January 5. ....

A Saudi court has rejected the bail petitions of three accused arrested in a case filed for the murder of a Bangladeshi domestic worker in Saudi Arabia two years ago.
Abiron Begum Ansar, who went to Saudi Arabia in 2017, was tortured allegedly at her employer s house and killed on March 24, 2019. Her body was kept in a mortuary there for seven months before arrival in the country.
During a hearing on Wednesday, the Criminal Court-6 in Riyadh asked the accused to submit a written reply in this regard. The family of Abiron, through their representatives, told the court that they wanted Qisas or similar punishment if her murder was proven in court. ....

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday asked the Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry and recruiting agencies to take care of Bangladeshi expatriates.
“I request you one thing that those who’re involved in manpower migration from recruiting agencies to the Ministry to give them (expats) the due honour and make sure they’re not facing any problem,” she said.
The Prime Minister said this while addressing a programme virtually marking International Migration Day 2020 from her official residence Ganabhaban.
Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry organised the programme at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC). ....

The government has been training workers to send skilled Bangladeshi workforce to a post-coronavirus global labour market, Expatriates Welfare Minister Imran Ahmad said today.
The ministry has taken different initiatives during the pandemic for the wellbeing of migrant workers and their family members and more will be taken in the future, he said.
The minister was addressing a views exchange meeting with migration sector stakeholders at Prabashi Kalyan Bhaban in the capital, said a press release of the ministry. ....
