Several thousand Bangladeshi workers are waiting to return home from Lebanon after losing their jobs amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and economic havoc created by political turmoil in the Middle East country.
Sources at the Ministry of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment say that the number of returnees will be around 10,000.
An official of the ministry, wishing not to be named, has confirmed it to the Daily Sun.
Abdullah Al Mamun, first secretary (labour) of the Bangladesh Mission in Beirut, said several thousands of Bangladeshi workers have applied to the embassy to go back home. ....

DHAKA, Dec 23, 2020 (BSS)- Minister for Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Imran Ahmed today said training is being imparted to provide skilled workers in the international labor market after the global pandemic Covid-19.
He said, “Various initiatives have been taken by the ministry for the welfare of expatriate workers and their families during the coronavirus pandemic and more initiatives will be taken in future.”
He was speaking as the chief guest at an exchange of views meeting on partner services and activities organized by Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL) on the occasion of International Migrants Day 2020 at Prabasi Kalyan Bhaban, said Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry press release here today. ....

Hyderabad, Dec 23 (IANS) The Telangana government has demanded the immediate rollback of the latest notifications by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), lowering the Minimum Referral Wages (MRW) of Indian labour in the Gulf countries by 30-50 per cent.
During an interaction with members of NRI associations here on Wednesday, Member of Telangana Legislative Council K. Kavitha made a strong demand for rolling back the ‘regressive’ order.
She stated that about 90 lakh migrants from across the country are currently working in the Gulf countries and among these a majority belong to the states of Telangana, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala. ....
