New Delhi: Fourteen people have died as a barge sank off India’s west coast after cyclone Tauktae barrelled into the country, authorities said on Wednesday. Indian navy ships and aircraft scoured waters to locate scores of other missing personnel.
“We can confirm that 14 bodies have been recovered from the rescue operation of Barge P305 that sank off the coast of Mumbai”, Mehul Karnik, chief public relations officer, Western Naval Command told Reuters. ....

GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Ulfa (I) chief Paresh Baruah have separately said they are seeing a “new ray of hope” for resolving the more than four decades old militancy problem in the state, which has claimed thousands of lives.
On Tuesday, Sarma visited the parents of Ritul Saikia, an ONGC employee who is being held in captivity by Ulfa (I), at Titabor and said the government is making all efforts to secure the safe return of Saikia to his home. He added that the three month ceasefire announcement by Baruah was a positive sign.
“I will embrace with open arms any ray of hope that appears on the horizon. I think Paresh Baruah should move a peace talks proposal,” Sarma said. Hours later, Baruah called up media houses to acknowledge Sarma’s “bold” initiative and assured that abducted ONGC personnel Ritul Saikia would soon be in his home. ....

A total of 638 people who were aboard ships near Maharashtra and Gujarat had either been rescued or their vessel had been secured by Tuesday evening.

Even as Cyclone Tauktae is weakening, as many as 93 crew members of an ONGC barge – Barge Papaa (P-305) - are still marooned in the Arabian Sea after the vessel sank 35 nautical miles off the Mumbai coast. Five ships of the Indian Navy, several Naval helicopters and the Indian Coast Guard were pressed into service to trace and rescue the crew members. At least 177 members of the 273 personnel on board were rescued in a massive search operation by the Navy. Navy ships Beas, Betwa and Teg joined INS Koc ....

State-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on Monday said a barge with 261 of its personnel deployed for offshore drilling in Bombay High in the Arabian Sea got de-anchored and started drifting because of the cyclonic storm Tauktae.
However, all the 261 people on board barge P305 are accounted for at 1300 hrs and barge has also been steadied , an official spokesperson told PTI. ....
