Aftermath of cyclone Tauktae: What caused the ONGC barge tragedy


When Cyclone Tauktae struck on May 17, there were 342 installations in the Western Offshore region of the Arabian Sea with 7,675 people.
Of these installations, 243 were fixed and 99 floating. ONGC officials say based on the weather warning, it activated its emergency response system and issued instructions to all installations to take action in line with the standard operating procedure.

Support Station-3 Construction Barge: Carried 202 people. Encountered mechanical problem while moving to safe location, its towing wire line snapped and started drifting. All rescued.
Sagar Bhushan Drill ship of ONGC: 101 onboard. Was required to stay there per SOP. However, its anchors gave away and it developed mechanical fault in the steering system. All rescued. ....

NEW DELHI: Offshore barges are like floating mini-townships without own traction and could require up to a week or more to lift anchor before they can be towed around. But three such vessels hired by ONGC and a drill ship owned by the state-run company going adrift after breaking loose from anchors due to cyclone Tauktae raises questions whether its severity was underestimated or the tempest deviated from its predicted path with a sudden drop in pressure.
People in the know told TOI the ‘Master’ of each vessel takes a call after evaluating warnings. “The Master, based on weather inputs, may decide that moving ‘X’ nautical miles away from the projected path of a cyclone will be safe. Here saving human lives and not infrastructure takes precedence,” a former ONGC executive said requesting anonymity. ....

Equity indices in red amid volatile trade, pharma companies gain


Trade in Asia-Pacific to bounce back in 2020
The key Indian equity indices traded in the negative territory on Wednesday morning a largely volatile trade. Around 10.26 a.m., Sensex was trading at 50,083.31, lower by 110.02 points or 0.22 per cent from its previous close of 50,193.33.
It opened at 50,088.81 and has so far touched an intra-day high of 50,279.01 and a low of 50,015.57. 
The Nifty50 on the National Stock Exchange was trading at 15,087.20, lower by 20.90 points or 0.14 per cent from its previous close. Heavy selling was witnessed in auto and banking stocks, however, gains in auto healthcare and power stocks restricted the losses.
Tech Mahindra, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and UltraTech Cement were the top gainers on the Sensex, while the major losers were Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Finserv and ONGC. ....

Mumbai: The Navy said its personnel, battling extreme weather, have rescued 184 of the 273 people onboard Barge P305 so far, adding all personnel on board. Two other barges and an oil rig are safe after Cyclone Tauktae rendered these vessels adrift.
“As of Wednesday morning, 184 personnel of barge P305 have been rescued and INS Kochi and INS Kolkata are returning to Mumbai harbour with the rescuees.” ....
