PROVIDENCE  Frank Montanaro s days at the State House have been numbered since former House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello was defeated at the polls in November. 
After months of rumors about where he might land, the former state representative from Cranston - and namesake son of a once-powerful labor leader - put in his last day at the State House on Friday.
He left quietly, without fanfare in a state Capitol building still closed to the public.
Montanaro headed business operations for Rhode Island s $46 million a year General Assembly.

Crews with the Battle Creek Fire Department said they battled a fire at 203 Post Avenue early Tuesday, April 20, 2021.
It was the fourth fire to ignite at the home since October 2020, when deputies said they found the bodies of Jaclyn Lepird and Joseph Soule in a truck on the property.
News Channel 3 crews arrived on scene at 4 a.m. Tuesday. Firefighters had left the scene after putting out the initial fire, but some flames reignited in the doorway. ....

Apr. 12 Shirley Hoffmann met her youngest great-granddaughter for just the second time on Monday in Charlotte.
It hasn t been distance keeping her away from her family. Hoffmann, 87, lives near Asheville in Arden, just two hours west of Charlotte.
I told my family, I can t take a chance of getting this (virus), because then I will become a burden on you, Hoffmann said.
Hoffmann s husband died 31 years ago, she said. She lives alone in Ardenwoods Retirement Community with her dog.
But on Monday, she reunited with her son Scott, and his daughter s family, including two of Hoffmann s great-grandaughters: 2-year-old Gracie and 7-month-old Margot, because she has been vaccinated. ....
