It’s been more than a year since the YWCA’s last Stand Against Racism event, and Director of Advocacy Kelly Houg knew that, compared to a pandemic, a little rain wasn’t going to stop this one from happening.
Following a last-minute switch from the Wassenberg Art Center’s Art Park to the center itself, Houg welcomed the approximately 100 masked area residents, both old and young, who attended the event, which was held in conjunction with the YWCA’s mission that it is dedicated to “eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.” ....

DCHS forensics qualifies 6 for National TOC

Six Dodge City High School forensics students qualified for the National Invitational Tournament of Champions recently.
According to DCHS forensics coach Johnny Dunlap, to qualify, the students must earn two bids at qualifying tournaments by placing high enough to win a bid.
For an idea of how difficult this is, the team competed in seven NIETOC qualifying tournaments to earn their six qualifiers, said Dunlap. Qualifying tournaments are the largest tournaments in the state and feature the best competitors.
The NIETOC National Tournament will be held online from May 5-8.
The NIETOC qualifiers for DCHS were:

Man Tells Harrowing Story After SUV Flips Over Wall, Off of I-355 Overpass

Ramos hit a patch of black ice, sending him skidding across four lanes of traffic. He then hit a bank of plowed snow, and the momentum of the crash carried him up and over a barrier.
“I just remember thinking that there were cars underneath, and that I was probably going to go over,” he said. “I had accepted my fate at that point. I just really didn’t want to affect somebody else at the same time.”
Somehow, Ramos didn’t hit another vehicle, landing on Lake Street with his vehicle right-side up.
“Some random gentleman called and said ‘your husband told me to call you. He went over the overpass on I-355,’” Olivia Ramos, Kevin’s wife, recalled. “I didn’t believe him.” ....

Smart Machines: AI technology's impact on Florida's business sectors

AI can’t replace humans, but the technology is making inroads in more and more business sectors.
In an oft-quoted interview with Life magazine in 1970, Marvin Minsky, an MIT researcher and pioneer in artificial intelligence, predicted that scientists were about three to eight years away from creating a machine as intelligent as the average human. Such a machine would “be able to read Shakespeare, grease a car, play office politics, tell a joke, have a fight,” Minksy said, and it would learn at such a “fantastic speed” that it would reach genius level within just a few months.
Fifty years later, Minksy’s vision of a machine on par with the human brain still hasn’t been realized — but popular AI tools, such as Google’s search engine and Apple’s Siri, have become part of everyday life, and machines are learning how to master an array of complex tasks, from operating self-driving cars to spotting tumors to monitoring crops. ....
