Former DA pleads guilty to exchanging sex for dismissing charges

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. â A former Assistant District Attorney for the First Judicial District entered a guilty plea in federal court Monday admitting he solicited a bribe in December 2018 in exchange for dismissing and expunging a woman s criminal charges in Jonesborough.
William E. Bill McManus, Jr., 50, pleaded guilty before the Honorable J. Ronnie Greer, Senior United States District Judge, to the solicitation charge.
McManus sentencing was set for Nov. 15.
As part of the filed plea agreement, McManus admitted that, while acting in his capacity as a prosecutor he dismissed and expunged shoplifting and possession of methamphetamine charges pending in Washington County Sessions Court in exchange for a commercial sex act with a woman with whom he had previously engaged in commercial sex acts. ....

MACOMB CO., Mich. - A former Macomb County prosecutor has pled guilty to an obstruction of justice charge after a federal investigation into fraud schemes he ran while in office.
Eric Smith admitted to investigators that he asked coworkers and friends to make false statements to law enforcement regarding a probe into thefts of tens of thousands of dollars through a political campaign fund.
Smith s guilty plea included an admission that he stole a total of $74,000 over two instances after writing checks to friends for office space and consulting work that instead was kicked back to Smith. ....

Two men have been charged for allegedly stealing mail from victims in multiple cities across southeastern Michigan over the past year, according to the U.S. Attorney s Office Eastern District of Michigan. Justin Lohman, 35, and Justin Cutshaw, 34, both of Redford Township, were charged in the ongoing scheme that also included bank fraud.

A young woman in New Hampshire was arrested on Wednesday after sending death threats to the chair of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers in November.
The FBI says Katelyn Jones, 23, sent images of a naked, bloodied corpse and additional threats regarding the daughter and husband of a Michigan election official.
During her arrest, court filings from the DOJ allege that Jones admitted to sending the threatening messages and photos.
