Just having completed the mammoth task of a PHD in German Irish History, Birte Shulrz McGaley is delighted to finally get it finished.
“It took a bit longer than I planned,” explained the Naas woman.
“I interviewed people who fled from the Nazis during the forties and came to live in Ireland.
“They had basically to become different people. To be forced out of your home and then get used to a different place, a different way of life, it was tough.” ....

BALLYBRICKEN paralympian Shane Ryan has been matched with a new training guide dog – and they couldn’t be happier together.
The 32-year-old, who has only six per cent vision – has been matched with German shepherd Leigh.
Alongside his mother Marie, Shane and his new guide are running 100km across the month of May as part of a fundraiser for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.
They will be doing a combination of walking, cycling and rowing on the rowing machine.

Former Kildare GAA footballer and proud Newbridge army man, Dermot Early, is backing this year’s Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind’s (IGDB) annual fundraising drive, tomorrow, Friday May 7.
Impressed by the work of the charity both here in Kildare and across Ireland, he has become an ambassador for the cause.
He was struck by the story of an Athy resident who lost her sight and came to rely on her guide dog.

The Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind (IGDB) has had a roaring start to its 100k Challenge with €86,000 raised nationwide so far.
“Thank you to everyone who has shared information and encouraged people to sign up and please do keep it going,” said a spokesperson for the IGDB.
“We are asking you to take on the challenge of walking, running or cycling at 100km throughout the month of May to help us change lives of people who are vision impaired and the families of children with autism. ....

Boss Roy Keane says he wants the Blues to end the season on a high when Sheffield United come to Portman Road on Sunday (KO 1pm). The Town manager says more of the club’s youngsters may be given a run-out against the Blades.
Keane told the club site: Our fans have been magnificent this season. We have not given them much to shout about this year but hopefully we can finish the season on a winning note with three points against Sheffield United.
One of the positives from this season has been the progress of one or two of our younger players. ....
