.- At this year’s LA Art Show, Rehs Contemporary will present a selection of works featuring some of the most iconic Marvel Comic characters; paintings completed by David Palumbo for Marvel Masterpieces 2020. At the art fair, which takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from July 29- August 1st, 2021, there will be a dozen works from the series on display; the first in-person viewing since they were unveiled. Back in 1992, the non-sport trading card industry was transformed by an ambitious new release – Marvel Masterpieces. Every other year, Upper Deck Entertainment and Skybox team up with a single artist to release a new premium set of trading cards. It is the artist’s job to put their own unique spin on iconic superheroes and villains… David Palumbo was selected to complete the most recent set, which was put out last year. As his most extensive project to date, it required the completion of 135 original ....

.- Upon first seeing Jason Stewart’s new work, I thought of Filippo Brunelleschi’s facade of the Ospedale degli Innocenti, the foundling hospital in Florence that he was commissioned to design in 1419. The arches of the hospital facade have always captivated me. Brunelleschi’s arches are perfect in their form and progression: perfect graceful architecture. Why, I wondered, did that architectural image appear as I looked at the series of paintings called “Shaping Color”? The precision of Jason Stewart’s arcs in their spaces on canvas resonate with Brunelleschi’s architecture. The paintings seem to transpose geometric architectural form into pictorial space. Perhaps this geometry would seem to belie the dominance and importance of color in these paintings. Yet color holds the arcs; the arcs hold color. The more one looks at these works, the more one observes the paradox between color and f ....

LONDON
.- Henry Ward got the inspiration for his new body of work – on display in his big summer solo show ‘Baffle’ – from the gutter. Literally from the gutter. Back in 2017, looking for stimuli to kick start a new series of abstract oil paintings, be decided to make little sculptures from random stuff he found on the ground when he was walking round the streets of London, where he lives. He built up a large collection of “rubber bands, squashed toys, bent nails, bits of plastic, that sort of thing”, and then, on his kitchen table, fashioned them into ingenious little works of art. “Unfortunately, the resulting paintings were rubbish,” he remembers with a smile. Fortunately, though, the act of making the sculptures – and he produced scores of them . More ....
