MISSOURI- A new bill introduced by Rep. Martha Stevens (D-Columbia) would provide vouchers for food at farmers markets for low-income, pregnant and postpartum women, as well as children up to 5 years of age who are at nutritional risk. House Bill 652 states that it will allow the Department of Agriculture to apply for a grant under the USDA Senior Farmer s Market Nutrition Program and apply for a grant and submit a state plan under the USDA s Women s Infant and Children (WIC) Farmer s Market Nutrition Program to help low income families who meet the requirements. When introducing this legislation, Stevens said her inspiration for proposing the bill came from her work with advocates. ....

North Adams Trying to Address Failing Hydrant System About one out of every five of the city s fire hydrants are nonfunctional, the City Council was told on Tuesday. iBerkshires.com reports the city has 631 fire hydrants of which about 500 are fully functional. Around 100 need to be fully replaced and another 30 can be repaired, at this point. The exact number of hydrants out of service or in some disrepair isn t clear and the city and the North Adams Association of Firefighters Local 1781 s numbers don t completely jive. The union, in a letter to councilors, said a survey had been done in 2018 at the direction of Fire Chief Stephen Meranti following an incident at a garage fire. ....

A Transport Accident Investigation Commission report into the September 12 incident was released yesterday. It said the skipper, who was also the owner of the Rakiura Charters water taxi Henerata, then assisted the passengers through the forward hatch out of the upturned hull. Read More ....
