NORTH ADAMS â North Adams officials are reviewing the cityâs fire hydrant infrastructure, after nonfunctioning hydrants delayed firefighters at recent blazes.
The City Council on Tuesday also will consider an ordinance to create a fire hydrant division within the cityâs Department of Public Services.
City officials estimate that about 100 hydrants are nonfunctional, out of more than 600 across the city, although estimates of how many are seized shut or broken vary between the Fire Department and the Department of Public Services.
Broken, frozen and missing hydrants slowed firefighters as they responded to two major fires over the past month, prompting the city to reconsider how it tracks and maintains hydrants.
Nonfunctioning fire hydrants again hampered efforts to get a raging fire under control at a two-family home at 47 Veazie Street in North Adams called in at around 5:50 this morning. I used to live a couple of doors up on Veazie and remember the home that was there.

IBerkshires.comreports that fire trucks on scene shortly before 6 am could not use the hydrant across the street from the Veazie Street home and were forced to run hundreds of feet of hose down to River Street and down School Street trying to find working hydrants.
North Adams Trying to Address Failing Hydrant System
About one out of every five of the city s fire hydrants are nonfunctional, the City Council was told on Tuesday.
iBerkshires.com reports the city has 631 fire hydrants of which about 500 are fully functional. Around 100 need to be fully replaced and another 30 can be repaired, at this point.
The exact number of hydrants out of service or in some disrepair isn t clear and the city and the North Adams Association of Firefighters Local 1781 s numbers don t completely jive. The union, in a letter to councilors, said a survey had been done in 2018 at the direction of Fire Chief Stephen Meranti following an incident at a garage fire.
