Masks are back in Idaho, at least for the local governments that want them.
In the latest tiff between them, Lt. Governor Janice McGeachin issued an executive order banning mask mandates while Governor Little was out of town. As soon as he returned, he rescinded it.
The incident is an escalation of tensions as the 2022 race for governor heats up. Lieutenant Governor Janice McGeachin is challenging Governor Brad Little for his job. McGeachin has repeatedly criticized Little for the way he has run the state during the pandemic, closing schools, businesses and churches. In Little’s executive order, issued Friday morning, he states that he has opposed statewide mask mandates all along, preferring to let local jurisdictions decide for themselves. He criticizes McGeachin for issuing an executive order while he was at a Republican governors’ meeting in Tennessee. Republican Scott Bedke says he’s ready for a new challenge after 21 years as a state representative and nine as the leader of the House. He’s the longest-tenured speaker in state history. Bedke says Idaho needs its number two elected official in the state to be an experienced player as it navigates rapid growth. “We’re going to have growing pains in the areas of education, transportation, natural resources and tax policy and those are the very areas where I’ve spent my entire legislative career, doing a deep dive in each of those subject areas and striking compromises, getting solutions, getting results in each of those areas, he said. ....
Committee names to vet IPTV general manager candidates BOISE, Idaho (KIFI) - The Idaho State Board of Education’s executive director has formed a screening committee to interview candidates interested in becoming the next general manager of Idaho Public Television. Ron Pisaneschi, the current GM, announced last week he plans to retire after more than 35 years working at IPTV, including eight years leading the statewide public broadcasting system. “Idaho Public Television is a tremendous asset to the State of Idaho,” Dr. David Hill, member of the State Board of Education said. “IPTV operates several channels and online platforms broadcasting high-quality programming and educational resources to our citizens. We need a new general manager who can continue the momentum established over the years that made IPTV one of the top public broadcasting systems in the country.” ....

SPR s Doug Nadvornick reports. The Idaho House has passed a trio of bills that chip away at the governor’s powers during an emergency. Since Governor Brad Little declared the current Covid emergency back in March, 2020, legislative leaders have chafed at how widely he has used his executive powers. They filed a variety of legislation to limit his ability to declare emergencies, or at least shorten the length of those emergencies. They’ve sought to stop him from requiring businesses to close and declaring some industry sectors as essential or non-essential. But most of that legislation has been watered down. ....
