A State Government announcement of an 11km tunnel between Blackheath and Mount Victoria has been condemned by Blue Mountains City Council.
Blue Mountains Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill, said: “They are not spending this amount of money for the occasional weekend traffic. Their own documents are clear that this is about introducing new and much bigger trucks to the Blue Mountains.
“This tunnel will be a massive attractor for 25 metre B-Double and 30 metre fixed rig trucks that currently can’t legally use the highway over the Blue Mountains. ....

NSW Government to build Australia's longest road tunnel under the Blue Mountains

The NSW Government is set to build Australia s longest road tunnel under the Blue Mountains.
The 11km stretch of tunnel between Blackheath and Mount Victoria could end up ballooning to $8billion or $730,000 per metre.
Regional Roads Minister Paul Toole said the tunnel, which forms part of the Great Western Highway upgrade, would be Northconnex but better for motorists bound for the state s central-west.
Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the proposed tunnel would transform the state by better connecting the Central West to the East Coast.
We have already committed to tunnels at Blackheath and Mount Victoria - this proposal would see those tunnels joined together, creating the longest road tunnel in the country, Mr Barilaro said. ....

The longest road tunnel in Australia would be constructed between Lithgow and Katoomba within the next decade under a plan being considered by the NSW government.
The 11 kilometre tunnel could cost close to $8 billion and burrow through the Blue Mountains and onto Lithgow as part of the multibillion-dollar upgrade of the Great Western Highway, connecting the Central West to Sydney.
The site of one of the tunnel exits would be to the south of Evans Lookout Road near Blackheath.

The eastern entry for the tunnel is expected to be located on the outskirts of Blackheath in national park land to the south of Evans Lookout Road, though the state government says neither tunnel portal will impact the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. ....

Investigations are now underway to make an 11-kilometre tunnel the central component of an upgraded Great Western Highway between Katoomba and Lithgow, forming the longest road tunnel in Australia.
Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the proposed tunnel would transform the state by better connecting the Central West to the East Coast.
“We have already committed to tunnels at Blackheath and Mount Victoria – this proposal would see those tunnels joined together, creating the longest road tunnel in the country,” Mr Barilaro said.
“This is an immensely complex and ambitious plan, but we’re working hard to make it happen because we know what a difference it will make to the lives of commuters, to regional businesses who need access to Sydney and vice versa, to freight companies, to families visiting relatives and to holiday makers. ....
