A 63-year-old environmental activist has defended her role in a blockade at a Bravus construction site, saying her actions were necessary in the face of an imminent climate breakdown . Carine Marie Visschers, from Cairns, appeared at Bowen Magistrates Court on Tuesday, pleading guilty to one charge of trespassing and one charge of contravening directions from police at Bravus Carmichael Rail Project construction site on April 9. The court heard a group of protesters attended at the Mount Coolon site about 6am, erecting anti-Adani signs and banners which blocked workers access to the site. At the time of her arrest about 9.30am, Ms Visschers was inside the construction site, sitting on a camping chair blocking the path of vehicles attempting to work on the coal exporting rail line. ....
Work is continuing at the Carmichael coal mine and rail project after police removed protesters trying to blockade the site in central Queensland. The protest by a group of 15 people is the second launched against mine project owned by Bravus, previous known as Adani Australia, in three days. Bravus is building a 10 million tonne-a-year thermal coal mine in the Galilee Basin, which could eventually be expanded to six times that size. Premium Content Subscriber only UPDATE 1PM SUN: RACQ CQ Rescue has airlifted a first responder to Mackay Base Hospital after two consecutive accidents on Bowen Developmental Road on Saturday afternoon. The Mackay-based rescue helicopter was already en route to Moranbah to transfer a patient to hospital when it was re-tasked to a serious single vehicle accident involving five occupants near Belyando Crossing about 2.30pm. An RACQ CQ Rescue spokeswoman said two rescue helicopters, including the Rescue 512 crew from Townsville, were tasked to the accident scene because of the number of people involved. When the rescue service landed adjacent to the accident site about 3pm, they were notified that an emergency services vehicle, which had also been on the way to attend the crash, had lost control and rolled just a couple of hundred metres from the first accident. ....
