Country Music Memories: 'O Brother' Soundtrack Goes Gold


Twenty years ago today (Feb. 9, 2001), the soundtrack for
O Brother, Where Art Thou? earned gold certification, for sales of 500,000 units. The album, which was produced by T Bone Burnett, includes songs by Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Ralph Stanley, the Fairfield Four and others.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? is based on the story of three men who escaped from a chain gang while imprisoned during the Great Depression in 1937, and music is prominently featured, and plays an important role, throughout the movie. The blockbuster film, which was released in 2000, boasts an all-star cast, including George Clooney, John Goodman, Holly Hunter and John Turturro; its 19-song soundtrack, filled with bluegrass, country, gospel and folk tunes, was released in the United States two weeks before the movie hit theaters. ....

Monroe theater hoping to secure historic designation | News, Sports, Jobs

The Monroe Theatre may become an official historic site in Woodsfield and is looking for the community s assistance to do so. Those with memories or mementos of famous performers taking the stage at the theater in its early years are urged to share them with the theater to aid in its endeavour.

WOODFIELD The Monroe County Theatre is seeking the public’s assistance and their memories to aid the theater in obtaining a historic designation.
Mick Schumacher, a county commissioner and member of the Monroe Arts Council, said the theater is applying to be listed on the National Register of Historical Places. ....

In 1966, 17-year-old Tony Trischka journeyed from his home in Syracuse, NY to Greenwich Village in Manhattan. Destination: the Gaslight Cafe, hub of the folk music universe, and an engagement with Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys. Tony’s real goal was to see Monroe’s banjo player Bill Keith, whose radical style had already dazzled him at festivals and on the radio. He’d even exchanged some letters with Keith, who was good enough to write back to an inquisitive banjo-obsessed teenager. Maybe at the Gaslight, Tony would get a good seat and be able to watch Keith’s hands and glean some secrets. Then something better happened.  ....
