John Hiatt To Release Album With Jerry Douglas Band

John Hiatt To Release Album With Jerry Douglas Band
John Hiatt has downed tools on a new album with the Jerry Douglas Band at the historic RCA Studio B in Nashville. The album is titled ‘Leftover Feelings’.
RCA Studio B is a studio built for musicians. “I was immediately taken back to 1970, when I got to Nashville,” said Hiatt upon entering the studio. A half-century ago, Hiatt lived in a ratty, $15-a-week room on Nashville’s 16th Avenue, less than a mile away from RCA and Columbia studios that were the heartbeat of what had come to be known as “Music Row.” “You can’t not be aware of the records that were made there…Elvis, the Everly Brothers, Waylon Jennings doing ‘Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line’ (which is referenced in the new song “The Music is Hot”). But that history wasn’t intimidating, because it’s such a comfortable place to make music.” ....

It’s been two steps forward, one step back for live music across Victoria recently, and the internationally renowned Port Fairy Folk Festival has been affected like so many others.
Festival director Justin Rudge said there won’t be thousands of folks creating the usual festival atmosphere in the seaside town in March. But homegrown musicians – including Kutcha Edwards, Tim Rogers and Mick Thomas’ Roving Commission – will shine at a handful of carefully curated shows. ....

Reissues have long been a solid cash cow for the music industry. The segment really took off after the introduction of compact discs convinced a lot of folks to buy CDs of everything that they owned on vinyl. During the 1990s and early 2000s when relatively few new albums were coming out on LP, indie labels such as Sundazed countered the CD revolution by reviving perennial favorites and rare titles on LP; even major label CBS/Sony was somewhat quietly repressing LPs off and on. Today, both serious and casual music collectors are continuing to fuel the resurgence of LP sales by purchasing a boatload of reissues. It s somewhat ironic that this time around, collectors are often looking for vinyl reissues of albums that were initially released only on CD and sometimes cassette (or occasionally in miniscule quantities on LP). ....

Hiss Golden Messenger And A New History Of North Carolina Music

.
Songwriter Brad Cook once told journalist David Menconi that The older I get, the more I think that we didn t choose North Carolina, it chose us. Brad and his brother Phil moved from Wisconsin, formed the power folk band Megafaun in Durham, joined Hiss Golden Messenger and generally helped build a vibrant contemporary scene. Brad called the move and the community “the greatest thing that ever happened to us.
Mike “M.C.” Taylor, the singer-songwriter mastermind behind Hiss Golden Messenger, one of the national breakouts from Durham and a current Grammy nominee, is quoted in a new Menconi book voicing a similar sentiment from a performance celebrating the 2018 Oxford American music issue, themed around the state: “Music is what drew me to this place and made it home for me.” ....

There is so much more to tell what music and life was like from the 1930s through 1940s before TV and all. I left out many French Canadian fiddlers small town square dances, etc. As poor as everyone was during the Depression, we had one bright spot. That was radio. It seems every family had a radio. We didn’t have cars or phones, we had little food, but radio helped the country through the hardest times.
There have been so many musicians in Vermont it’s hard to list them all. Old time fiddlers, retired farmers, country people of that radio generation now are gone. Thankfully young people are keeping traditional music from going extinct. ....
