Luckily for Paul Manship and his legacy, “decorative” is no longer a pejorative term in today’s pluralistic art world. The recent revival of interest in the “pattern and decoration” art movement of the 1970s and ’80s, for instance, and the renewed appreciation for craft and craftsmanship among contemporary artists, call for a reassessment of those for whom refinement, elegance, graceful forms, and decorative lines, plus astute allusions to art-historical precedents, are hallmarks of their highly polished productions. As the leading proponent of “archaism,” an international modernist movement that thrived in the first decades of the twentieth century, Manship would find many likeminded artists today, ranging from Carlo Maria Mariani and Audrey Flack to Sarah Peters and Justin Matherly, who have regularly incorporated ....

His streamlined, Art Deco style, and ability to represent his subjects at peak moments of drama attracted critical acclaim, particularly in the 1920s and 1930s. Seen together in this exhibition, his signature bronzes and associated sketches paired with ancient artifacts illuminate how Manship became a master of sampling imagery and meldi ....

A presentation of art was among the many moments in Washington during Wednesday’s presidential inauguration.
During non-pandemic inaugurations, a specially selected painting would have hung behind the head table at a traditional welcome luncheon for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Instead, U.S. Senator Roy Blunt – chair of the inauguration committee – stood next to a temporary wall in the U.S. Capitol where an oil painting hung.
Blunt addressed a small, socially distant crowd and presented a 19th century landscape, chosen to reflect the theme of the day, Our Determined Democracy: Forging A More Perfect Union. ....
