LAKE WALES The Lakes Wales Charter School District has launched an investigation into the administration of Hillcrest Elementary School to determine whether recently removed Principal Jennifer Barrow created a hostile work environment for teachers and staff at the well-regarded school, which would constitute a violation of Florida administrative code. “The Lake Wales Charter Schools HR Director notified the Interim Superintendent of multiple complaints by current and former employees regarding harassment and intimidation by the leadership,” Interim Superintendent and Chief Financial Officer Alricky Smith wrote in a letter to the district’s board. “These complaints have yielded allegations of an oppressive environment at the School under the leadership of Principal Jennifer Barrow.” ....
Letters to the editor (Jan. 27, 2021) The Ledger Lake Wales schools privileged to handpick students As a former teacher for 24 years at Janie Howard Wilson Elementary School in Lake Wales, I was disturbed after reading the front page article about the Lake Wales Charter Schools [ ‘Turmoil’ roils charter schools, Dec. 20]. I was one of the original writers for our school to become a charter school. The reason we wanted to leave the Polk County School System was that we were not being treated like the schools in Lakeland. A lot of the funds were going to Lakeland schools and the Ridge was being left out. As a matter of fact, our school was one of the last to get an outdoor covering for our playground area. ....
The district continues to receive applications, with a Jan. 31 deadline at midnight for the final applications to be submitted. Superintendent Jacqueline Byrd announced her retirement in May. Her successor is scheduled to be selected at the April 27 board meeting. The applicants so far are: • Wayne Alexander, Ed.D. Serves as a school principal (PK-8) in “the largest multi-cultural school in Connecticut.” He is also the former Hernando County schools superintendent, serving between 2007 and 2009. He has served as a teacher and administrator for 34 years. • Adam Lane The Haines City High School and Haines City International Baccalaureate principal, a position he has held for the last six years. He also helped develop and implement an IB program at Largo High School, which aided in the consecutive D school” to move to an A grade within two years.
