Sotheby’s will auction Portrait of a Youth (left), attributed to Piero del Pollaiuolo, seen next to Botticelli’s Young Man Holding a Roundel Photo: Julian Cassady Photography; Courtesy Sotheby’s “When we say, ‘This is a Botticelli,’ what do we mean? If the phrase implies that the master conceived the work and executed it without assistance, few paintings would qualify,” writes Jonathan Nelson, teaching professor at Syracuse University, Florence, in his 2009 article, “‘Botticelli’ or ‘Filippino’? How to Define Authorship in a Renaissance Workshop”. “With the exception of some very small works,” Nelson notes, “virtually all paintings by major Renaissance artists were made with varying degrees of workshop assistance.” ....
Sandro Botticelli s Portrait of a Young Man Holding a Roundel, (c. 1444/5 – 1510) at Sotheby s New York. Courtesy of Sotheby s. A rare-to-market 15th-century masterwork by the Florentine super-star painter Sandro Botticelli, Portrait of a Young Man Holding a Roundel from circa 1480, led Sotheby’s live-streamed Master paintings and sculpture sale on Thursday morning for a record $92.2 million. Bidding opened at an eye-popping $70 million and chugged along with the help of chandelier bids at $2 million dollar increments until a real one came in at $78 million, quickly followed by the winning $80 million hammer price. Everything had been prepared for the portrait to go to the Getty, Lewis says: the family had even been advised to delay the sale until the Getty was ready to buy, which they duly did. But the night before the sale, the ....
Sandro Botticelli s Portrait of a Young Man Holding a Roundel (around 1480) is set to break a record for the Old Master painter PHOTO: JULIAN CASSADY PHOTOGRAPHY; COURTESY OF SOTHEBY’S Sotheby’s sale this month of an arresting Botticelli portrait, owned by the late real estate billionaire Sheldon Solow, has been heavily publicised. Yet, while Portrait of a Young Man Holding a Roundel (around 1480) is accompanied by the obligatory paraphernalia of X-ray and infra-red images, its many mysteries continue to confound trade and scholars alike. And the estimate, in excess of $80m, has no precedent: works fully attributed to Botticelli rarely come up and the auction record for a painting by the artist is just $10.4m, set in 2013 by the “Rockefeller Madonna” (or ....
