(CNN)  One of the last Sandro Botticelli portraits left in private hands sold at auction for more than $92 million at Sotheby s New York on Thursday.
The 15th-century painting Young Man Holding a Roundel became the most expensive work by the Renaissance artist ever to appear at auction, and the most valuable Old Masters work ever sold at Sotheby s, the auction house announced.
It was also the second work to top the $80 million mark since Sotheby s began live-streaming its auctions during the pandemic, according to a press statement, with the first being Francis Bacon s Oresteia of Aeschylus, which sold for $84.5 million last June. ....

A small painting by Sandro Botticelli fetched $US92.2 million ($120 million) at auction at Sotheby’s on Thursday, in the art market’s first big test of the new year.
The result, an auction record for the Renaissance painter, was also the highest price paid for an old master work since Leonardo da Vinci’s
Salvator Mundi sold for $US450 million in 2017. It also represented a windfall for the foundation of billionaire Sheldon Solow, who had bought it for about $US1.3 million in 1982. The proceeds from the sale may be used to establish a private museum in Manhattan.

Sotheby’s sale this month of an arresting Botticelli portrait, owned by the late real estate billionaire Sheldon Solow, has been heavily publicised.
Yet, while
Portrait of a Young Man Holding a Roundel (around 1480) is accompanied by the obligatory paraphernalia of X-ray and infra-red images, its many mysteries continue to confound trade and scholars alike.
And the estimate, in excess of $80m, has no precedent: works fully attributed to Botticelli rarely come up and the auction record for a painting by the artist is just $10.4m, set in 2013 by the “Rockefeller Madonna” (or ....
