International group of experts publish consensus definition of 'postbiotics'

The idea of deriving health benefits from live microorganisms is well known, but some non-living microorganisms, too, can have beneficial health effects. Yet even with an increasing number of scientific papers published on non-viable microbes for health, the category is not well defined and different terms are used in different contexts.
Now, a group of international experts has clarified this concept in a recently published scientific consensus definition in
Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology. The authors use an established term postbiotics and precisely define it as a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host . ....

After more than 84 years of enjoying a beautiful life, Marilyn Elaine Thomas passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021.
Marilyn was born into a joyful and energetic family in Kansas City, Kan., in 1937. She brought great joy to her parents, Martha Ann Roberts Sanders and Gaston Sanders. Marilyn, sister Martha Ann and brother Gaston III grew up in Detroit, where their parents taught in the public school system, which sparked young Marilyn’s interest in education.
Growing up, Marilyn was actively involved in summer sports, field hockey and swimming. She was proud to pursue her college career at Michigan State, where she joined her beloved roommates, AKA sorority sisters and lifelong friends, Shirley Northcross and Carolyn Stevens. Upon graduation from Michigan State, she initiated her lifelong pursuit in education as a young teacher in the school system. ....

WHEELING Annual events to celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have been canceled in Wheeling this year, but a remembrance of the civil rights leader will take place online.
MLK Celebration Committee Co-Chairs Rev. Ignatius Sasmita, S.J. and Ron Scott Jr. have announced the annual march slated for Sunday and other events “have been cancelled out of an abundance of caution and to adhere with the State of West Virginia guidelines.” ....

CHASE WATTS of St. Clairsville is receiving the Martins Luther King Award from the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee in Wheeling.
ST. CLAIRSVILLE A St. Clairsville resident is being honored for his commitment to equality by the Martins Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee in Wheeling.
Chase Watts, an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper, is being given the Martin Luther King Award.
“Mr. Watts is an Ohio State Trooper who works to inspire and help the people around him. He pursued a career in law enforcement upon graduation from Martins Ferry High School and has been in the profession for more than10 years. He is currently assigned to the Office of Recruitment & Diversity,” according to the committee. ....

A team of scientists organised by ISAPP has created the first international consensus definition for fermented foods.

The 13 authors, with expertise in family medicine, microbiology, food science and technology, ecology, immunology, and microbial genetics, take care to note the difference between probiotics and the live microbes associated with fermented foods. The word probiotic , they say, only applies in special cases where the fermented food retains live microorganisms at the time of consumption, and only when the microorganisms are defined and shown to provide a health benefit, as demonstrated in a scientific study. ....
