Marathon Meath County Council meeting proves too short

LMFM By Marc O Driscoll Several controversial motions dominated the day s proceedings and left some councillors feeling short-changed. A marathon five-hour Meath County Council monthly meeting did not prove long enough for councillors yesterday. Several members were left frustrated after time was called on the virtual meeting before their proposals could be discussed. The council s monthly meetings were moved online to comply with public health guidelines and allow more time for the local authority to conduct its business - and more time was indeed needed yesterday. However, standing orders meant that the meeting could not be extended any further despite over five hours of deliberations.

Beamore Road residents trapped in their homes

But Cllr Stephen McKee wants action now to help them, including a footpath to Southgate. The area near Colpe roundabout is a danger, he told a recent council meeting. There are a lot of houses on the Beamore Road and it is very unsafe. The gardai have been out with speed checks but there has been no long term difference. We need rumble strips or ramps, he stated. Cllr Elaine McGinty said a plan was needed for the area. Engineer Christy Clarke said they had a huge problem with vehicles hitting the barriers at the Colpe roundabout and they would be looking at options to calm traffic in the area.

New road proposed for Rathmullen would transform travel time across Drogheda town

A new developer-led stretch of road, an extension of the road into the IDA Park on the Donore Road and exiting around Sheephouse, would transform traffic on the overstretched Rathmullen Road. That s the proposal Cllr Paddy Meade put to fellow councillors at last week s special planning meeting in relation to the new Meath Co Development Plan. It is now likely the proposal will form part of the Transport Strategy report presently about to commence between Meath and Louth County Councils. Cllr Meade said the new road would service the likes of St Oliver s Community College and all the residents in that area.
