Anderson Police Chief Michael Johnson is primed to become the next sheriff of Shasta County after the Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to put his appointment on its next agenda.
The vote was 4-1 with District 4 Supervisor Patrick Jones adamantly dissenting, claiming appointing somebody sheriff before the next election in June 2022 would not allow the public to have a voice in the decision.
Johnson, who has been the chief in Anderson since 2012, would take over for Eric Magrini, who resigned last month to take the newly created job of assistant county executive officer.

Shasta County Supervisor Patrick Jones says charges filed against Red White and Blueprint co-founder Carlos Zapata will not hurt the effort to recall three other supervisors.
Jones has been a key player in attempting to recall supervisors Joe Chimenti, Leonard Moty and Mary Ricket by way of appearances at fundraisers and in a video produced by Red White and Blueprint.
He spoke about the effort going strong because of Recall Shasta and noted how that grassroots organization operates independently from Red White and Blueprint, whose two other managing members are Jon Knight and Jeremy Edwardson.
His comments, diverging with their group, came in the wake of Monday s decision by the Shasta County District Attorney s Office to charge Zapata, Christopher Meagher and Elizabeth Bailey with misdemeanor battery and disturbing the peace in the May 4 altercation with Nathan Pinkney, a left-leaning community activist who opposes the recall.
