ELIZABETHTON â In a special called meeting on Monday evening, the Carter County Commission soundly voted down a bid of $3,428,687.40 for a new countywide communications system that would have provided up-to-date radio communication for 10 agencies, including law enforcement, emergency medical services, and fire departments. The motion was to vote down the $3.5 million bid and to start over with a new request for proposals for a countywide communications system. According to the Carter County Clerkâs Office, the vote to reject the bid was 19-2, with three absences. Isaiah Grindstaff and Thomas Proffitt were the only ânoâ votes. Mike Hill, Randall Jenkins and Gary Bailey were absent. ....

ELIZABETHTON â Riverside Park, a facility of the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Elizabethton, came in for some tender loving care last weekend. The departmentâs director, Mike Mains, said his staff got plenty of help during the Friends of the Park Service Day on Saturday. He said his department âteamed up with the Johnson City Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saintsâ on a project that included âthe planting of knockout roses, the mulching of flower beds and volunteers picking up trash and other debris along the banks of the Watauga.â Church member Emily Baddley said about 25 members from the church participated. ....
ELIZABETHTON â Downtown Elizabethton held its first First Friday of the season Friday, with many shops and restaurants offering sales and staying open late. In addition to shopping and dining, several other activities were going on. Watts Dance Studio put on a program to a large and enthusiastic crowd in the backyard of the Elizabethton Fire Department, the first of three performances during the evening hosted by the Bonnie Kate Theater. The other two were the East Tennessee Ballet Academy and another dance show put together by the Appalachian Irish Dance Academy. The longest lines were at the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce, where people stood in line for registration packet for the Music and Miles Half Marathon. The race takes place today and extends from one end of Elizabethton to the other. ....
