Carter County Commission votes down $3 5 million bid for countywide communications system

ELIZABETHTON — In a special called meeting on Monday evening, the Carter County Commission soundly voted down a bid of $3,428,687.40 for a new countywide communications system that would have provided up-to-date radio communication for 10 agencies, including law enforcement, emergency medical services, and fire departments. The motion was to vote down the $3.5 million bid and to start over with a new request for proposals for a countywide communications system. According to the Carter County Clerk’s Office, the vote to reject the bid was 19-2, with three absences. Isaiah Grindstaff and Thomas Proffitt were the only “no” votes. Mike Hill, Randall Jenkins and Gary Bailey were absent.

Tarps being given away at Carter County Landfill on May 7

ELIZABETHTON — Trucks hauling items to the Carter County Landfill between the hours of 1-3 p.m. on May 7 are going to get something back. Keep Carter County Beautiful, Keep Tennessee Beautiful, the Carter County Landfill, the Carter County Mayor’s Office and the City of Elizabethton will be handing out tarps to cover loads being hauled to the landfill during that time. Edward Jordan, chairman of Keep Carter County Beautiful said the give-a-ways are being done in the hopes that all trucks will cover their loads in the future. Jordan said most Tennessee litter comes from uncovered loads. “Please receive this gift and use it to protect our highways, your bank account, and the environment,” he said.

Saturday s Watauga Lake cleanup called a success

HAMPTON — The first of a series of cleanups of litter from East Tennessee rivers and lakes was a success despite the cold weather, according to Ed Jordan, president of Keep Carter County Beautiful. “The Watauga Lake cleanup last Saturday was a success,” Jordan said. “Thanks to all the volunteers who braved the cold weather and water that made this event a great success.” The event was the kickoff of a series of four cleanups in the Cherokee National Forest River Cleanup presented by Volkswagen. The remaining events of the series will be held at South Holston Lake on Saturday, Feb. 13, starting at 10 a.m. at the launch point at 19482 County Park Road in Abingdon, Virginia; Tellico Lake on Saturday, Feb. 20; Parksville Lake on Saturday, Feb. 27; and the Ocoee River on Sunday, Feb. 28.
