A’s fans, players and team execs got great news Tuesday: Their shortstop, Marcus Semien, is signing with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Also Tuesday came news that infielder Tommy La Stella, who hit .289 for the A’a last season in 27 games, has signed with the Giants.
On the surface, the Semien news was a sledgehammer to the gut of the A’s, final proof that the organization is broken financially, artistically, competitively. ....

D-backs add Chavez, Nieves to bolster bench

NASHVILLE, Tenn. While rumors continued to swirl about a high-profile deal involving Justin Upton, the D-backs went about filling some of their bench needs on Wednesday at the Winter Meetings, agreeing to one-year deals with third baseman Eric Chavez and catcher Wil Nieves.
Chavez, who turns 35 this week, will likely see a good deal of playing time at third base, along with the right-handed-hitting Chris Johnson. Given Chavez s age and injury history, the D-backs would like to keep him to 300 to 400 plate appearances.
He d been kind of a target guy from the get-go, D-backs general manager Kevin Towers said of Chavez, who resides in the Phoenix area. I think our park kind of caters to his swing. It s home for him, and there s something to be said for that. He s going to be at home and around his family in a comfortable environment. We thought it was a good fit. ....

Fire that left nine Hudson resident homeless earlier this month caused by undetermined electrical event

HUDSON – An undetermined electrical event sparked a blaze earlier this month at a Felton Street apartment building that left nine people homeless.
Fire officials recently completed their investigation of the Dec. 7 fire at 29-31 Felton St. Fire Chief Bryan Johannes stressed residents should not use extension cords with space heaters. The chief said space heaters draw a lot of power and some extension cords are not rated to carry the amperage of a space heater.
All nine residents of the apartment building were able to escape the fire uninjured. No firefighters were injured during the blaze, which took firefighters from Hudson, Marlborough, Stow and Sudbury about 30 minutes to extinguish. ....
