AROUND THE SHIELD It s been an incredible weekend surrounding the 2021 NFL draft.
Five BYU players were drafted during the three-day draft extravaganza, the most since 2002. Eight more signed as undrafted free agents or received rookie mini-camp invitations, in addition to wide receivers Micah Simon and Aleva Hifo, two Class of 2020 graduates from last year who earned a shot with the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints, respectively.

CLEVELAND Moments after the 86th NFL draft began in Cleveland on Thursday night, Zach Wilson took a call from the New York Jets brass letting him know that they were about to select the former BYU quarterback with the No. 2 pick.
“You could just see the emotion pouring out,” said Sitake, who was invited by Wilson to attend the festivities, along with several of Wilson’s former coaches, mentors and trainers. “It just all sunk in for them. I am honored to have been able to witness that.”

PROVO One of the first things that stood out to New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas about Zach Wilson and one key reason why he selected the former BYU quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in Thursday s NFL draft was his emotion and passion.
Wilson doesn t just enjoy football. He eats it, drinks it, chews it up and spits it out then goes back to do it over again tomorrow.
But those emotions caught up to Wilson as he walked out of the green room at the NFL draft theater in Cleveland on Thursday night, grabbed a Jets Flight Crew hat off a pedestal, and went to shake NFL commissioner Roger Goodell s hand after slapping palms with a half-dozen Jets fans in the pits as the highest pick in BYU football history.
