‘Everybody Needed to Know What Happened’: Mamie Till-Mobley’s Fight for Son Emmett’s Justice to Become Movie Starring Whoopi Goldberg
Mamie Till-Mobley has long been known as the Black mother whose 14 year-old son,
Emmett Louis Till, was brutally tortured and killed in Mississippi during the Jim Crow Era.
But now, the masses will know her as not only the “mother of the civil rights movement,” but just how far she pushed to make justice for her son a reality. The upcoming movie, “Till,” will chronicle her decision to have an open-casket funeral to show her son’s gruesomely disfigured body which was photographed for Jet magazine in 1955 and how her fight for justice helped launch a movement.

Chambers, the creator of

Jazzspel, became personal friends with Tillâs mother in 2000 when he executive produced a play called âThe State of Mississippi vs. Emmett Tillâ and brought it to San Diegoâs Educational Cultural Complex. â

She became a surrogate grandmother to me,â said the 9-times Emmy and Golden Mike Award-winning producer.

According to
Danielle Deadwyler who has also been tapped to star in the
Chinonye Chukwu-directed feature. Deadwyler will play Mamie Till-Mobley, while Goldberg will portray Till’s grandmother,
Alma Carthan. As previously reported,
Till chronicles Mamie’s decision to allow
Jet magazine to publish the open casket photos at her son’s funeral. In doing so, she ensured “people everywhere saw the true horrors of her son’s murder” which helped usher in the civil rights movement. A release date for
Till has yet to be announced.
