It has officially been 50 years since the release of Marvin Gaye s iconic What s Going On album.
After the genre began fizzling out in the 50s, the group s founding member Harvey Fuqua took then 20-year-old Gaye to Detroit where he met Berry Gordy Jr., the founder of Motown records. At the label, he earned the title of Prince of Motown for his soulful sound and duetted with the likes of Diana Ross.
Gaye was shot dead in 1984, the day before his 45th birthday, by his father Marvin Gaye Sr. after an altercation. ....

With “Da 5 Bloods,” Spike Lee set out to tell a story about Black veterans’ experiences, crafting his tale around Marvin Gaye’s 1971 album “What’s Going On,” which encapsulated what soldiers faced during the Vietnam War abroad and after coming back home.
“Marvin had an older brother that did three tours in Vietnam; he was a radio operator. So he was writing Marvin periodically and giving him a firsthand account of the horrors of the Vietnam War,” Lee explains. “But also, he’s in Detroit, so he’s seeing the bloods come back in body bags, the ones who were maimed or strung out on heroin.” ....

Before Twitter existed, we could pretend our politicians, who although they clearly always have had their faults, were people who had empathy for their fellow citizens.
Twitter proved how wrong we were. Turns out, plenty of politicians are jerks who would much rather glibly hit send on a tweet that would allow their fellow jerks to have a dark laugh than show an ounce of compassion. ....

“Pearl” contained Joplin’s take on “Me and Bobby McGee,” an instantly revered recording that found Joplin singing Kris Kristofferson’s words with both coiled restraint and enormous feeling. The song ended up being Joplin’s only Top 40 hit under her own name; with Big Brother and the Holding Company, she hit No. 12 in 1968 with “Piece of My Heart.” ....
