Researchers confirm new drug development route for treating multiple sclerosis, asthma

Researchers confirm new drug development route for treating multiple sclerosis, asthma
Brazilian researchers who study a native venomous fish have confirmed a route to drug development for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis and asthma.
The venomous toadfish Thalassophryne nattereri contains a peptide (TnP) with anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic potential. Confirmation of this potential has now come via the zebrafish Danio rerio, a popular aquarium species native to South Asia that shares 70% of its genome with humans and is widely used as a model for in vivo trials in drug development.
The researchers tested TnP in D. rerio to measure its toxicity. In a little over a year, their research showed that the peptide is safe. It did not cause cardiac dysfunction or neurological problems in the toxicity tests they performed. ....

African cassia tree can be used to relieve pain and inflammation

Cassia singueana, or African cassia, is a small tree that’s native to tropical Africa, particularly in countries like Ethiopia, Angola, Namibia, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. A plant with a variety of uses, the African cassia tree is often grown in these parts as an ornamental plant as well as a source of food and medicine. While the seeds and leaves of this tree are edible, its root bark, stem bark and leaves are widely used for medicinal purposes.
In a recent study, researchers in Nigeria investigated the phytochemical composition of the root bark of the African cassia tree. They noted that parts of the tree are traditionally used for the treatment of pain and body aches associated with malaria, but the specific components responsible for its therapeutic effects have not been identified. ....

Tocilizumab cuts mortality risk in severely ill COVID-19 patients finds new trial conducted in India
Tocilizumab, an anti-inflammatory drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, improves outcomes in severely ill COVID-19 patients, finds the results of a new trial conducted in hospitals across India – one of the world’s most ethnically diverse countries.
Researchers from the University of Bristol and Medanta Institute of Education and Research in India who led the study, published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, say it adds to existing evidence supporting the drug’s use in critically ill patients.
Conducted in 12 public and private hospitals across India, the COVID India Tocilizumab (COVINTOC) phase 3 randomised controlled trial aimed to investigate whether tocilizumab could prevent disease progression and mortality in hospitalised patients with moderate to severe COVID-19. ....
