Three Maine conservation groups plan to sue Brookfield over Kennebec dams

By Staff
Three conservation groups plan to sue Brookfield Renewable Partners for what the groups say are repeated violations of the federal Endangered Species Act, the latest salvo over Brookfield s dams on the Kennebec River.
Four dams owned by Brookfield (NYSE: BEP) between Waterville and Skowhegan threaten the survival of Atlantic salmon, according to the notice of intent to sue filed by the Conservation Law Foundation, Maine Rivers and the Natural Resources Council of Maine.
Brookfield’s authorization to take  Atlantic salmon trying to pass upstream and downstream through the dams expired in 2019, and since that time the company has continued to kill fish, in clear violation of the ESA, the groups said in a news release. ....

GARDINER Dozens of volunteers picked up plastic coffee cups, cigarette butts, tires, construction debris, food wrappers, masks, and random bits of plastic and anything else found improperly discarded in a spring cleanup Saturday in downtown Gardiner and along Cobbossee Stream. Participants noted, however, that their efforts weren’t really just about cleaning up those two specific areas.
Saturday morning 676 pounds of garbage was collected by 31 volunteers who took part  in a cleanup organized by Upstream, a local nonprofit dedicated to restoring sea-run fish passage on Cobbossee Stream. The cleanup was tied to the upcoming Earth Day and focused on cleaning up the Cobbossee Stream corridor. The group was not alone, though, as still more vo ....

Rooks: Maine dam pratfall leaves other questions in its wake

Rooks: Maine dam pratfall leaves other questions in its wake
Douglas Rooks
In a stunning development last week, the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) announced it was abandoning its effort to amend dam licenses on the Kennebec River that could have prompted federal orders to remove four main-stream hydroelectric dams.
The move came after Brookfield Renewable Partners, the international renewable energy giant based in Canada, which owns the dams and many other hydro facilities in Maine, filed suit in Kennebec County Superior Court to block the rulemaking.
Next-day reporting left much to be desired. One account had DMR Commissioner Patrick Keliher describing it as a “process problem.” Another said Keliher “would halt the process,” which was true, but did nothing to explain the sudden reversal. ....
