In a stunning development last week, the Department of Marine Resources (DMR) announced it was abandoning its effort to amend dam licenses on the Kennebec River that could have prompted federal orders to remove four main-stream hydroelectric dams.
The move came after Brookfield Renewable Partners, the international renewable energy giant based in Canada, which owns the dams and many other hydro facilities in Maine, filed suit in Kennebec County Superior Court to block the rulemaking. ....

On Monday, William “Bill” Bridgeo announced his intention to retire as Augusta’s city manager in September, after decades of service to the community.

AUGUSTA City Manager William “Bill” Bridgeo has announced his retirement, after 23 years as Augusta’s manager and 43 years in municipal management.
The 71-year-old Maine native said he still loves his job, but the time is right for someone new to take on the job and for him to join his wife, Janice, who retired six months ago after two decades as an elementary school teacher in Winthrop. ....

State regulators withdraw Kennebec dams removal amendment

The Maine Department of Marine Resources will withdraw an amendment to its Kennebec River Management Plan that suggests removing four dams from the Kennebec River between Waterville and Skowhegan.
We are suspending the current proposed rule making, DMR spokesman Jeff Nichols said Friday. We’re doing this after reviewing comments on the proposed rule and conducting a review of DMR’s authority to undertake fisheries management plans.
The department will take the time necessary to determine the best path forward for the adoption of a new management plan that establishes an appropriate long-term vision for this river’s fishery resources, Nichols told Mainebiz. ....
