The Edmonds-South Snohomish County Historical Society has elected three members to its board of directors and elected a new president.
Newly elected Board President Barbara Fahey and board members Thomas Mesaros, Emily Scott and Dave Teitzel were sworn in during the society’s March Annual Meeting.

Mesaros has been working in the nonprofit sector since 1975 and continues to sit on several national and local boards and committees. He also served on the Edmonds City Council from 2014-2019.

Edmonds-Woodway student, teacher selected for 2021 Bezos Scholars program

Edmonds-Woodway High School student Owen Lee and educator Nick Wellington have been selected for the 2021 cohort of the Bezos Scholars program.
The Bezos Family Foundation launched the Scholars program in 2005 to provide young people a platform to design solutions to some of the most pressing issues facing their communities.
Lee is passionate about climate justice and mutual aid, and hopes to use this opportunity as a Bezos Scholar to fight some of the root causes of food insecurity in his community. “I’m most excited to meet people who are passionate and engaged in their communities and can teach and inspire me,” he said. ....

The nonprofit Hazel Miller Foundationa has announced grants it has awarded to local organizations for 2020 and 2021
Over the course of the 2020 grant cycle, the foundation approved several grants including Dawson Place Child Advocacy Center: a safe home to serve children up to 18 years of age who have experienced trauma; Concern for Neighbors Food Bank:, which collects and distributes food to homeless and low-income families; and Teachers of Color, which supports people of color pursing teaching careers in the Edmonds School District.
The following organizations received foundation awards during the first grant cycle of 2021:

Edmonds man running all weekend to benefit food bank

Starting at 8 a.m. Friday, Edmonds resident Armando Ortiz began running across Edmonds to raise money for the Edmonds Food Bank. This is no ordinary run, however. Ortiz will be running four miles every four hours for 48 hours.
According to friend Susan Powell, Ortiz is responding to the 4x4x48 Facebook challenge from “his idol” David Goggins, a retired Navy SEAL and the only member of the U.S. Armed Forces to complete SEAL training (including two Hell Weeks), the U.S. Army Ranger School and Air Force Tactical Air Controller training. ....
