In a recent letter addressed to the Edmonds City Council, Edmonds restaurant owner Shubert Ho expressed his appreciation for the city government support that has enabled Edmonds businesses to continue and thrive in our community. “I’m writing to thank you all (councilmembers) for passing the Streateries Ordinance, which has ensured the vitality of our restaurant and retail industry in Edmonds,” Ho said. His letter went on to praise the “diligence and speed of drafting this code by the City Development Department,” and the impact this made on ensuring restaurants can continue to do business. “You all heard our cry for help,” said Ho, who along with partner Andrew Leckie operates six restaurants through their Feed Me Hospitality and Restaurant Group. ....

With a focus on helping Edmonds residents and businesses recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and an eye toward future initiatives from Highway 99 renewal to racial justice, Edmonds Mayor Mike Nelson delivered his first State of the City address Thursday night. The address, which was shared virtually both via Zoom and on the city’s cable channels, began with introductory remarks by Edmonds restaurateur Shubert Ho. He acknowledged the impacts of COVID-19 on the community, and also on his business which “pivoted” to outdoor dining and takeout and his family. “My wife’s a teacher in the Edmonds School District, so her world drastically changed, as did the day-to-day experience for our two school-age daughters,” Ho said. ....

Holly House is another of our oldest relationships. Right about now, most of us are getting $600 or more from the government. We didn’t ask for it and many of us don’t really need it. You may have thought that it should have gone instead to people to whom $600 could make a real difference. So, what can we do to get that money to individuals or groups struggling to stay afloat ? ....
In partnership with The Heroes’ Cafe, Homage Senior Services hosted the drive-thru event. Donations were used to make cold-weather clothing packages to be distributed in homeless camps. The Heroes’ Cafe partnered with several other organizations to help distribute the packages. Volunteers prepare boxes of donated clothing to be distributed. Piles of donated clothes filled the community room at Homage Senior Services after this weekend’s cold-weather clothing drive to support veterans within the homeless community. The event was sponsored by The Heroes’ Cafe in partnership with Homage, the American Red Cross and the City of Lynnwood. Dozens of community members dropped off used and new coats, sweaters, boots and scarves that will be distributed throughout homeless camps in the area. ....

Members sworn in on Wednesday included Haifa Alhussieni, Karen Barnes, Michael Carter, Lillyan Hendershot, and Karen Shiveley. “We could not be more thrilled with this new slate of board members,” said Board President Gary Haakenson. “We continue to strengthen our board as we start an exciting new chapter as the Edmonds Waterfront Center.” The new board members will each serve a three-year term. Haifa Alhussieni Haifa Alhussieni and her husband Nabil own the Café Louvre, where in addition to offering coffee, pastries and sandwiches they support local poetry, art and music groups. Alhussieni also serves on the Inclusion and Accessibility Committee of the Edmonds Center for the Arts. ....
