Local EOC recommends Sitkans mask, distance amid surge

Some downtown Sitka businesses have begun requiring masks again, and others are reducing capacity and updating policies in response to the recent surge in coronavirus cases. (KCAW/Rose)
The Sitka Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is now recommending masking and social distancing for Sitkans, regardless of coronavirus vaccination status. 
When the EOC met on Wednesday (7-14-21), both Fire Chief Craig Warren and Public Health Nurse Denise Ewing emphasized that all Sitkans should follow the recommendations, at least until the recent surge in Sitka tapers off.
While health officials continue to report the vaccine’s high efficacy, even against the more transmissible delta variant of the COVID virus, around 30 % of the coronavirus cases reported last week in Sitka were breakthrough [18 out of 60 reported], meaning the patients contracted the virus even after being fully ....

“Really what’s going on here is an issue of people ending up in the hospital who are unvaccinated,” Dr. Elliot Bruhl told the Sitka Assembly on July 13. He went on to add that the growth in cases “has really been centered in three clusters, or groups, of people who have chosen not to get vaccinated and also chosen to associate closely with one another.” Nevertheless, both Bruhl and Sitka Incident Commander Craig Warren advised a return to masking in public areas until the outbreak cools. Sitka woman medevaced following accident on Cascade Creek Road

A 25-year-old Sitka woman was medevaced to Anchorage after she rolled her car on Cascade Creek Road Tuesday evening (7-13-21).
911 dispatchers received a call about the accident shortly after 6:45 p.m. According to police spokesperson Serena Wild, the woman was driving her 1995 Ford Bronco down the steep street. She turned right into a driveway, and her car rolled. She was ejected from the vehicle.
When officers arrived, the woman was responsive, and said she felt like her hip was broken. She was taken to Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center and later medevaced to Anchorage for treatment of her injuries.  ....

Twenty more Sitkans tested positive for the coronavirus Tuesday (7-13-21), based on information added to the city’s COVID dashboard. 
All but one of the patients were experiencing symptoms at the time of testing. The patients vary widely in age from a child under 10 to a woman in her 80s. Seven of the patients are in their 30s. Contact tracing is still in progress for most of the cases. So far, two of the cases are listed as “secondary,” meaning they had known contact with a COVID positive patient. One case is tied to community spread. Public health officials have not yet specified how many of the newest wave of patients are unvaccinated. ....
