As active COVID cases reach 235, Sitka's EOC renews call for masking, social distancing

Posted by Katherine Rose | Jul 23, 2021 The City of Sitka released updated COVID mitigation guidance today that includes new guidelines for travel and testing, and gives specific recommendations for fully-vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals (City of Sitka) Update 7-23-21, 1:30 PM: The text of this story has been updated to reflect new data shared with KCAW this morning, which included the number of breakthrough cases counted over the last three days. Over the last two days, Sitka reported 64 coronavirus cases (7/22-7/23).  Many of the new cases are in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, and all were experiencing symptoms when they received testing, according to the city’s COVID dashboard. 4 of the new cases are “non-residents.” Contact tracing is still in progress for most of the cases, so it’s still unclear where most of the cases contracted the virus.

Growing COVID-19 outbreak in Sitka unlikely to affect Alaska's first large commercial cruise since 2019

Posted by Eric Stone | Jul 20, 2021 The Royal Caribbean ship Serenade of the Seas approaches Ketchikan during a test cruise with volunteer passengers on July 9. (Eric Stone/KRBD) A growing COVID-19 outbreak in Sitka isn’t likely to affect Wednesday’s arrival of Alaska’s first large cruise ship to bring commercial passengers since 2019. Royal Caribbean officials put out a statement Tuesday touting the Serenade of the Seas’ 7-day cruise to Alaska. Sitka Emergency Operations Center Incident Commander Craig Warren said Tuesday afternoon that as far as he knows, the stop in Sitka is a go. “We have contacted them and talked with them regarding the ship coming in tomorrow with our high COVID case count here,” Warren said. “And as it stands right now, they are still planning on coming in.”

Even with COVID 'breakthrough' cases, epidemiologists say vaccine remains best defense

Posted by Robert Woolsey, KCAW | Jul 19, 2021 At least 21 breakthrough cases have been reported so far in Sitka’s recent COVID outbreak. But state epidemiologists say that statistic is not particularly unexpected, and maintain that the vaccine remains the best defense against the coronavirus (KCAW/Berett Wilber) State health officials are still crunching the data from the latest outbreak of COVID-19 in Sitka and some other Alaskan communities, and haven’t drawn any firm conclusions from the apparently high rate of “vaccination breakthrough”  that is, infections occurring in individuals who are fully vaccinated. Nevertheless, they say the evidence is clear that vaccination is still the number one tool in the fight against COVID– and the math bears that out.
