Nick Rioux didn’t have to wait long to face off against his old team. The 20-year-old defenceman who was picked up Nov. 30 from the Quesnel Millionaires by the Prince George Spruce Kings will face off against his old teammates tomorrow night at the Coliseum at 7 p.m. The Spruce Kings host the Mills and the Cowichan Valley Capitals for the final home games of 2006. Rioux played a season-and-a-half for the Mills before being traded to the Spruce Kings. “I was kind of expecting it with the situation in Quesnel,” said Rioux. “I was excited to know it was PG. I like it here. I knew Brayden [Penner] so it helped me. It will be good to see the guys again.” ....
It’s been a dreadful season for the Prince George Spruce Kings, but they aren’t prepared to write if off yet. The Spruce Kings are eight points behind the seventh-place Quesnel Millionaires with 17 games remaining, far from mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. While the Spruce Kings occupy the basement of the B.C. Hockey League with a record of eight wins, 33 losses, zero ties and two overtime defeats (8-33-0-2), seven of eight Interior Conference teams qualify for the playoffs. Therefore, despite their poor record and struggles the past couple of months, postseason hopes are still alive for the league’s northernmost team. ....
The Prince George Cougars have moved into second place in the B.C. division after beating the Seattle Thunderbirds Tuesday and Wednesday night, 3-1 and 6-1. The Cougars (10-5-2-1) have a five game winning streak going and have passed the Kamloops Blazers, but are still four points behind Kootenay in the race for top spot. “Our mandate is to not be satisfied and to just continue to get better. If we’re going to have a chance to stay in the race or even advance higher we’ve got to do as much as we can to win as many games as possible,” says head coach Ed Dempsey. ....
