It is May 6, and – well over a year into a global pandemic that has impacted every member of the Staten Island community – it is time to pause for National Nurses Day 2021, part of this year’s nurse appreciation week.
It is difficult to send our thoughts back to last spring, when New York City was the epicenter of an emerging global pandemic, PPE was in short supply, the hospital beds were full, and morgues were working overtime to manage those who did not survive. ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The state released updated coronavirus (COVID-19) related deaths at nursing homes and adult care facilities after being forced by a judge to release the data.
The state Department of Health updated its website, without a formal press release or announcement, to reflect the new data COVID confirmed out-of-facility deaths of nursing home residents. ....

NEW YORK, Jan. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/  With the significant rise of COVID-19 cases, Gerber Technology has launched an initiative to help local communities in need of protective gowns. In partnership with their network of manufacturers and charitable associations, RetailersUnited and Fashion For the Frontlines, Gerber is donating 5,000 Level 1 gowns to various organizations in need. The gowns are made of DuPont™ Tyvek® material that is specifically assigned to Gerber Technology for use in PPE (personal protective equipment) production. All of the gowns are being produced in U.S. factories to help keep local workforces employed. ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. It was a time like no other. The year 2020 will be forever remembered for the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic with the global crisis hitting New York City in March, bringing with it sorrow and tragedy of unparalleled proportions. Yet, Staten Islanders showed and continue to demonstrate amazing resilience through it all.
The Advance/SILive.com was able to publish some incredible images of hope throughout the year.
As we combed through the photos some taken by our photographers, others submitted to us we found so much to be grateful for over the past 12 months.
