India – Uzbekistan bilateral summit gives a boost to growing relations between the two nations

December 20, 2020 Share As part of India’s Central Asian Policy, Uzbekistan has emerged as the central country in the region with which India has been actively engaging increasingly over the last few years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This engagement further solidified with the holding of a recent virtual bilateral summit. On December 11, 2020, Prime Minister of the Republic of India, Narendra Modi and President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, co-chaired a virtual summit between the two countries. This was significant as it marked the first time that India has held a bilateral summit with any country located in the Central Asia.

A Joint Statement issued yesterday after the virtual Summit held between the two leaders said, India and Uzbekistan have agreed to work towards an early conclusion of Bilateral Investment Treaty to facilitate investment promotion and protection for further improvement of trade and economic cooperation. The Indian side confirmed the approval of a 448 million US dollar Line of Credit to be extended by India for four developmental projects in Uzbekistan in the fields of road construction, sewerage treatment and information technology.
