Local Foods unveils expanded, grocer-restaurant concept in Rice Village Published: Tags: Local Foods Market opened in Rice Village earlier this month. The store replaced benjy’s, which closed in 2020. The new grocer-restaurant concept offers counter service and grab-and-go meals along with a grocery marketplace. “We are thrilled to continue the pop-up success with the conversion of benjy’s into a larger Local Foods Market,” said Benjy Levit, Local Foods Owner in a release. “Our Chefs have created an amazing menu featuring upscale ingredients for diners to enjoy in a casual atmosphere. We wanted to create a fun wine-centric space with a laid-back vibe, a new way to highlight our great purveyors.” ....
Flappy Wings and Burgers, 1315 W. Grand Parkway, began its soft opening December 29. A grand opening is planned within the next couple of weeks. The business began originally in Katy Mills Mall by Huma and Riaz Ahmad who were school clothes shopping when they came across a kiosk for lease. Riaz had dreamed of opening a restaurant so the couple decided to purchase the former deli space and begin their own venture. After two years, they decided they needed a proper kitchen and closed up shop at Katy Mills in late November 2020 in order to relocate to the new space. The menu is extensive and eclectic at Flappy with a mix of Pakistani, Mediterranean, Greek, Mexican and Italian food along with some great burgers. The Turbo Burger is one of its best sellers and offers a beef patty topped with Philly cheesesteak meat, provolone and American cheese. The OâHara Commons is closing out the imperfect 2020 year with a new category on their Local Foods Market storefront with items called âimperfects.â Executive Director Samantha OâByrne said it started with their gleaning program that began four years ago with anyone contacting them to help harvest and distribute produce. âWe just go and pick it up,â OâByrne said. âWe have our certified kitchen if we need to process it at all and then we redistribute it to the community.â The gleaning program has processed and redistributed close to 10,000 pounds of food. The first year included 3,700 pounds of apples in one day with seven volunteers and 49 hours. ....
