Grants help students get ag research experience

Jun 15, 2021 to Jun 17, 2021
A new grant at Washington State University will allow undergraduate students from WSU, Eastern Washington University, Lewis-Clark State College, and Gonzaga University get real-world agricultural research experience.
The USDA National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Research and Extension Experiences for Undergraduates (REEU) grant will put students to work on field research and lab work centered on crops, including visits to farms to talk with agricultural stakeholders.
The program will culminate in a final project that students will present to their peers and advisors. Students from all four institutions will be eligible to apply for the project, which will be hosted at WSU. ....

Just a few changes to an enzyme s amino acids can be enough to dramatically change its function, enabling microbes to inhabit wildly different environments.
University of Queensland microbiologist Associate Professor Ulrike Kappler, led by an international team of researchers, made this discovery when investigating how Haemophilus influenzae bacteria colonise the human respiratory system.
This disease-causing bacterium is supremely adapted to living in humans, so much so that they cannot survive anywhere else, Dr Kappler said.
It turns out that one enzyme, MtsZ, is the key player in this adaptation. ....

Cassava Sciences Announces Initiation of Cognition Maintenance Study in Alzheimer's disease

Published: May 10, 2021
AUSTIN, Texas, May 10, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) Cassava Sciences Inc., (Nasdaq: SAVA), a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on Alzheimer’s disease, today announced the initiation of a Cognition Maintenance Study (CMS) to evaluate simufilam in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Simufilam is a drug candidate that seeks to reduce neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation. Cassava Sciences believes the ability to impact more than one aspect of Alzheimer’s disease represents a new and crucial approach to treatment.
“We’ve observed good safety and cognitive improvements in study participants treated with open-label simufilam,” said Remi Barbier, President & CEO. “The CMS is a randomized, controlled study designed to evaluate changes in cognition over six months in study participants who continue with drug treatment versus those who stop treatment. We believe clinical data from the CMS may inform the benefit-risk assessments that ....
