A Prince Albert church will contest in court the large fine it received from government authorities in October for violating public health orders and provincial COVID-19 guidelines. The Alberta lawyer who will represent Full Gospel Outreach says religious groups and street churches in particular have been targeted by authorities during the pandemic and the case will revolve, in part, around the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Meanwhile, the church’s pastor says the government has been “unbalanced” in its enforcement of the laws and argues health officials don’t understand the importance of spiritual gatherings. The church’s legal costs will be paid for by the far-right political online media outlet Rebel News, which has run a crowdfunding campaign to give legal assistance to those who, as they say, “have received a lockdown ticket.” ....

Church Briefs - Dec. 11 FacebookTwitterEmail First Christian Church will host a Christmas Eve service at 6 p.m. on Dec. 24. It will be open to the public. Masks and social distancing are strongly recommended. The service will also be livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page. College Heights Baptist Church, 802 Quincy, will host a live drive-thru nativity on Friday and Saturday. The event will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Church members are preparing to act out scenes from the Bible and the public is invited to watch. People are encouraged to remain in their vehicles throughout the performance. The start of the nativity will be at 8th and Portland Streets. It is free to attend. ....
